Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards 08

For a second year, Production Designer Simon Beresford was asked to design the set for the second annual Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. The starting point for this year’s design was looking at 1950s architectural schemes for cities of the future and town planning. Simon felt that children often have an advanced understanding of fantastical worlds through books and computer games, and so would respond well to a built environment rather than a stage set; thus leaving one world and entering the world of Nickelodeon.

An important aspect of the design had to be the incorporation of slime. Simon achieved this with a slime volcano, which had a personality of its own, and reacted to specific events in the show. One was never quite sure when the volcano would explode!

Another pivotal aspect of the show was the positioning of the screen within the set. Simon worked closely with Adrian Offord from Creative Technology to ensure they supplied the correct screen and capitalised on the optimum viewing angle for the kids and cameras, Creative Technology supplied an OLite 612 screen positioned stage right on the set.
